More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's "Landschaft in Gelb" (Landscape in Yellow), crafted around 1921, invites its viewers into a mesmerizing abstract landscape dominated by warm yellow tones and intricate geometric forms. This striking piece juxtaposes sharp, angular mountain-like shapes with soft, curvilinear forms that suggest celestial bodies or atmospheric phenomena, creating a dynamic and engaging interplay of lines and colors. The predominant yellows, set against a stark black grid and highlighted with blues and purples, evoke a sense of energy and movement, as if the landscape itself is alive and in constant transformation. The use of bold black lines not only adds structure to the vivid abstraction but also guides the viewer’s eye across the undulating contours of this imaginative terrain."Landschaft in Gelb" is a fine example of how early 20th-century art movements influenced Wiener, blending elements of Expressionism and Cubism to convey the emotional and spiritual experience of a landscape, rather than its physical reality. This painting is not just a visual exploration but also an invitation to perceive the natural world through a lens of emotional intensity and vibrant color.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
