More about this artwork
Jan Toorop’s evocative piece, "Oude vrouw omringd door jonge vrouwen" ("Old Woman Surrounded by Young Women"), is a compelling exploration of age, beauty, and the transitory nature of life. Created in or after 1928, this artwork showcases Toorop’s distinctive style, which merges elements of Symbolism and Art Nouveau with a touch of modernism. In the composition, an elderly woman sits prominently at the forefront, her expression contemplative and slightly weary, surrounded by the youthful vitality of the younger women. These figures are rendered with more ethereal, flowing lines, contrasted against the more solid, almost sculptural form of the old woman. The young women appear engaged in various activities: one holds a mirror, another grasps at a flower, suggesting themes of vanity and fleeting beauty. The setting of the painting is intricately detailed, with architectural elements and a decorative border that hint at a tapestry-like quality, further adding to the timelessness of the narrative. The blend of directness in the portrayal of the old woman with the dreamy quality of the younger figures around her creates a poignant dialogue between the inevitability of aging and the ephemeral nature of youth.

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a 19-century Dutch-Javanese painter who extensively experimented with different artistic styles ranging from Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau to Pointillism. He was famous for using highly stylized slim figures and dynamic lines that were influenced by Indonesian motifs and curvilinear lines. His most famous poster artwork “Delft Salad Oil”, commissioned by The Dutch Oil Company, became so iconic that the Dutch Art Nouveau painting style is given the nickname "the salad oil style". Despite the fact that Toorop's expertise was in producing designs for marketing and advertisements, he also produced a number of fine art pieces that dealt with darker subjects including the human physche and emotions.
