More about this artwork

Jan Toorop's ethereal 1898 drawing, "Schets voor Panis Angelicus", invites viewers into a world of spiritual reflection and mystic calm. In this striking depiction, a figure stands enveloped in what seems to be a divine light, her gaze lifted heavenward, evoking a sense of deep contemplation or transcendental communication. The subject, likely representing an angel or a saint given the halo-like effect around her head, is rendered with fine, flowing lines that suggest both fragility and a serene strength. The detailed texture of her flowing robes and the expressive quality of her hands—outstretched as if to receive or offer a spiritual gift—further enhance the painting’s celestial aura.In Toorop's composition, light and shadow play critical roles, creating a luminous backdrop that contrasts with the darker, more solemn tones of the figure and the foreground. This chiaroscuro effect not only highlights the spiritual theme but also imbues the piece with a sense of depth and volume, emphasizing the ethereal presence at the center of the work."Schets voor Panis Angelicus" can be interpreted as a vivid exploration of faith and the divine connection between the earthly and the heavenly.

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a 19-century Dutch-Javanese painter who extensively experimented with different artistic styles ranging from Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau to Pointillism. He was famous for using highly stylized slim figures and dynamic lines that were influenced by Indonesian motifs and curvilinear lines. His most famous poster artwork “Delft Salad Oil”, commissioned by The Dutch Oil Company, became so iconic that the Dutch Art Nouveau painting style is given the nickname "the salad oil style". Despite the fact that Toorop's expertise was in producing designs for marketing and advertisements, he also produced a number of fine art pieces that dealt with darker subjects including the human physche and emotions.
