More about this artwork

Odilon Redon's intriguing etching, "Perversite" (Perversity), created in 1891, is a captivating example of his artistic exploration into the shadowy and mystical corners of human psychology and emotion. This piece showcases Redon's mastery in the Symbolist movement, emphasizing thought and feeling over realistic representation. The artwork features a portrait of a figure with a haunting and strangely compelling gaze. The figure's face emerges from darkness, illuminated subtly, drawing the viewer's attention to its ethereal and somewhat disturbing expression. Notable is the enigmatic aura that surrounds the character, portrayed with fine, delicate lines that trace the contours of the face and neck, conveying both gentleness and an unsettling intensity. The use of light and shadow in this composition complements the theme suggested by the title "Perversity". It hints at inner conflict or malevolent thoughts, echoing the complexities of human inner worlds. The figure's mysterious, downward gaze and indirect look contribute to a sense of inward reflection or hidden intentions, prompting viewers to ponder what thoughts lie beneath that enigmatic exterior. In "Perversite," Redon does not merely create an image but invites us into a deeper contemplation of the darker aspects of the soul.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
