More about this artwork

Artist: Camille Pissarro (c. 1880)Description: Camille Pissarro, a master of impressionism, beautifully captures a day in the life of rural workers in his poignant sketch, "Pea Harvesters." This piece, created around 1880, is remarkable for its sketchy and lively execution, a testament to Pissarro’s ability to breathe life and realism into his portrayals of peasant life. The artwork displays several figures engaged in the laborious task of pea picking, each absorbed in their task against a loosely sketched countryside backdrop. The focus on everyday labor and the naturalistic setting is typical of Pissarro, who often highlighted the dignity of rural workers. The figures are varied in their postures and attire, suggesting individuality even within the shared activity.Distinctive for its use of soft color washes and defined sketches, "Pea Harvesters" embodies both a sense of immediacy and ephemeral grace. The drawing’s composition allows the viewer a glimpse into a moment of collaboration and individual effort, showcasing the intersection of human endeavor and the rhythm of pastoral life.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
