More about this artwork

"View of Rouen" (1884) is a captivating etching by Camille Pissarro, an artist known for his contributions to the Impressionist movement. This artwork offers a serene depiction of Rouen, a historic city in Normandy, France. Pissarro intricately captures the calmness of the river Seine, which reflects the cityscape with breathtaking precision. The composition is balanced, with the dynamic sky artistically sweeping over the high-reaching spires of the city’s buildings, including what appears to be the cathedral’s famous tower. The rich texture and the distinct brushstrokes in the clouds and water create a vibrant contrast to the finely detailed skyline. In the foreground, the figures of two individuals add a human element, inviting viewers into the scene as silent observers of the tranquil moment.Pissarro's choice of monochrome tones enriches the etching, evoking a sense of timelessness and nostalgia.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
