More about this artwork

Dive into the serene landscape of Camille Pissarro's "Bords De L’epte À Êragny, Soleil Couchant," painted in 1897. This captivating painting draws the viewer into a tranquil late afternoon along the banks of the Epte River in the small village of Éragny, where Pissarro spent his later years. The artwork illustrates a lush riverside scene bathed in the soft glow of a setting sun. Pissarro employs his mastery of impressionist techniques to capture the light as it filters through the abundant green foliage, casting a play of colors that vibrates across the canvas. Tall, slender trees anchor the composition on either side, guiding the viewer’s eye to wander along the gentle curves of the shimmering river. The reflections in the water flicker with strokes of light blue, green, and white, suggesting the movement of the gentle current under the evening sky. The vivid greens of the shrubs and trees evoke the freshness of early spring, creating a sensation of peacefulness and renewal.Through the meticulous layering of quick, spontaneous brush strokes, Pissarro infuses the scene with a sense of immediacy and the fleeting quality of natural light. This painting not only depicts the beauty of the French countryside but also reflects Pissarro’s continuing exploration of the interplay between light, color, and nature.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
