More about this artwork
"Woman with Red Hair" (1917) is a distinctive painting by Amedeo Modigliani, capturing the essence of his unique style characterized by the elongation of forms and an ethereal approach to portraiture. The painting portrays a woman with strikingly vibrant, curly red hair, which frames her delicately modeled, serenely composed face. The subject is donned in a dark dress with a soft, luminous white collar, creating a striking contrast that draws attention to the gentle pallor of her skin and the contemplative gaze of her eyes.Modigliani's attention to the sitter's graceful pose is evident, as she rests her arm on a red chair back, an element that adds a subtle touch of color that complements her hair. The background, executed in muted tones, enhances the focus on the subject, emphasizing her introspective demeanor.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard Munch, Paul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
