More about this artwork

Welcome to an intimate glimpse into the subtle grace of "Alice" (1916-1919), painted by the influential Italian modernist Amedeo Modigliani. This striking portrait embodies Modigliani’s distinctive style—characterized by elongated forms and elegant, simplified features that convey deep emotional resonance. In this painting, Alice is depicted with a serene expression, highlighting Modigliani's ability to capture the soul of his subjects through his art. Her elongated face, accentuated by delicately outlined almond-shaped eyes that gaze directly at the viewer, creates an intimate connection. Her straight, long dark hair, adorned with a light-colored ribbon, frames her face and cascades gracefully over her shoulders.Alice's attire, a simple yet striking blue dress with subtle white trim, complements her gentle demeanor. A small cross hangs from a necklace, resting just below her clasped hands—hints of her personal story or spirituality that Modigliani leaves to the viewer’s interpretation. The background, though stark, contrasts with the warmth of Alice's figure, accentuating her presence and the soft, earthy tones of her skin. Modigliani's use of texture in the brushwork adds a tactile dimension to the piece, drawing viewers closer into Alice's world.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
