More about this artwork
"Portrait Of The Artist Léopold Survage" is a compelling work by Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, created in 1918. Modigliani, renowned for his unique approach to form and portraiture, captures the essence of his fellow artist Léopold Survage with both intimacy and stark expressiveness. In this portrait, Survage is depicted against a textured, neutral background that draws the viewer’s focus entirely to the subject’s visage and attire. Modigliani utilizes a muted palette, primarily in earth tones, which complements the solemnity and subtle complexity of the portrait. Survage's facial features are stylized in Modigliani’s signature manner with elongated form—noticeable in the stretched, almond-shaped eyes that provide a window into the subject’s introspective demeanor. The details of Survage's appearance, including his elegant black jacket and the delicate white shirt starkly visible at the neckline, are rendered with broad, confident brushstrokes. A hint of a reddish-brown tie adds a touch of warmth to the otherwise cool color scheme. This portrait not only showcases Modigliani's distinctive artistic style but also subtly conveys the personality and perhaps the inner life of Léopold Survage, making it a remarkable piece in the oeuvre of Modigliani's portraiture.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard Munch, Paul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
