More about this artwork

The painting "Expulsion of Adam and Eve, After Masaccio" by Magnus Enckell, created in 1898, draws its inspiration from the famous fresco by Masaccio but delivers it through the unique lens of Enckell's style. The work features the figures of Adam and Eve in the foreground, visibly distressed as they are expelled from Eden. Adam covers his face with his hands in a gesture of shame or despair, while Eve holds one hand to her face and the other over her chest, her expression one of sorrowful resignation. Both figures are portrayed nude, emphasizing their vulnerability and human frailty.Above and behind them, dominating much of the upper composition, is an imposing angel. This angel, with powerful, extended wings and a robust physique, appears to be ushering Adam and Eve out of Paradise. Interesting to note is Enckell’s use of colors and light; the angel is depicted in a warm, reddish tone that contrasts with the cooler, more subdued hues of the background and the paler skin of Adam and Eve. This contrast may highlight the divine power and other-worldly nature of the angel in comparison to the human figures. The setting is sparse, focusing attention squarely on the emotional and physical state of the figures. The background features architectural elements that suggest the boundary of the paradise they are being forced to leave.Enckell's interpretation carries a poignant emotional impact, emphasizing the drama and tragedy of the biblical story.
