More about this artwork

"An Amateur" (1915) by John William Godward is a striking display of Neoclassical beauty, captured through the artist's distinctive attention to detail and love for classical antiquity. This painting portrays a serene and contemplative young woman, dressed in sumptuous, flowing robes that hint at the fashion of ancient Rome or Greece. Her attire, rich in vibrant hues of pink and purple, beautifully contrasts against the cool, marble backdrop, enhancing her elegant pose and thoughtful expression. The woman in the painting is seated on an ornate chair adorned with a luxurious leopard skin, adding an exotic touch to the refined interior. She holds a drawing tablet, attentively examining her work, which reflects the painting's title, "An Amateur," suggesting her engagement in art as a leisurely pursuit rather than a professional endeavor. The surrounding elements—a classical statue of a nude male figure, a profusion of vibrant flowers in an ornate vase, and a beautifully marbled table—further encapsulate the richness of the era Godward admired. These objects not only adorn the space but also serve to reinforce the themes of beauty and artistry that are central to Godward's work.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
