More about this artwork

John William Godward's evocative painting "Mischief and Repose," created in 1895, is a masterpiece that wonderfully captures the intersection of beauty, tranquility, and playful intimacy. This oil on canvas highlights Godward’s signature style, where classical themes merge with meticulous realism, and his profound attention to detail breathes life into every brushstroke. This artwork depicts two women in classical attire, resting leisurely against a richly textured backdrop of marble and luxurious furs, which might remind viewers of the opulence and aesthetic of ancient Roman or Greek settings. The woman on the left lies supine, draped languidly across a tiger skin, embodying the essence of repose. Her peaceful, almost dreamlike state contrasts with her companion, who leans gently across her, engaging in a playful yet tender interaction by teasingly pulling a strand of hair across her face. The mischievous expression and the dynamic pose of the sitting woman bring an element of light-heartedness to the otherwise serene scene. The finesse in Godward's treatment of textures - from the translucent drapery of the dresses to the realistic fur of the tiger skin and the polished marble - showcases his extraordinary skill in rendering materials so they appear incredibly tangible. The attention to detail in the marble columns and the draped curtain further pulls the viewer into this much-idealized, yet distinctly palpable, classical world."Mischief and Repose" is not just a display of technical excellence, but also an evocation of mood and a snapshot of a fleeting, intimate moment between two individuals. This piece invites viewers into its serene world, allowing them to linger on the details and perhaps reminisce about the timeless themes of friendship and leisure in art.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
