More about this artwork
This striking image, titled "National Flags" by Leo Gestel, captures an array of flags depicted in a dynamic and somewhat abstract style. The artwork is rendered in a robust, expressive manner with heavy, vigorous lines that almost seem to vibrate with movement. The flags are densely packed together, each angled slightly differently, suggesting a blustering wind environment. The choice of black and white enhances the dramatic effect, focusing attention on the patterns, textures, and the overall composition rather than the specific colors associated with national flags. The flags appear to be fluttering fervently, which may evoke feelings of nationalism or the chaotic beauty of diverse nations standing together.Gestel's technique here, with its bold strokes and crowded framing, could be interpreted as a metaphor for unity or conflict among nations. Alternatively, it may suggest a commentary on the turbulence and perpetually shifting dynamics of international relations. This piece, with its palpable energy and intensity, leaves much to the viewer's interpretation regarding the relationships between these nations, symbolized by their flags, thrust together in such a compact space.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
