More about this artwork
The painting "Horses And Men" by Leo Gestel features a stylized, expressive depiction of several horses and men, set against a backdrop that appears to represent a forested or natural environment. This scene is rendered in a linear, almost cartoonish style. In the painting, we observe two men, each leading a pair of horses. The horses, portrayed in various stances, display an animated character, their heads held high and their poses lively. The men look focused on their task yet gentle in their handling of the horses. The artwork’s black and white palette emphasizes the sketch-like, bold outlines of the figures and the scenery.Gestel's use of simplified forms and curves, alongside a lack of detailed facial features or textural elements in the animals and humans, renders an almost abstract interpretation of the scene. The expressiveness is achieved through the poses and the dynamic arrangement of the figures within the frame.Overall, Gestel captures a harmonious interaction between humans and horses, set in a naturalistic setting, all conveyed through minimalist yet effective artistic marks.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
