More about this artwork
The painting "Woman With Horse" by Leo Gestel is a striking example of line art, utilizing minimalist black lines on a white background to suggest forms rather than detailing them fully. The composition intimately captures two subjects: a woman and a horse. The horse stands slightly behind and to the side of the woman, positioned in a way that both profiles align, suggesting a connection or bond between the two.The woman's features are delicately outlined, showcasing her serene expression and flowing hair, which mirror similar stylistic treatment in the depiction of the horse's mane and gaze. This shared simplicity and elegance in the lines that depict both figures help create a sense of harmony and unity in the artwork. The style is reminiscent of Gestel's explorations in different modern art movements, including cubism and expressionism. Here, however, there is a distinct focus on form and line, pulling back from color and detail to relay emotion and connection through stark, simple contrasts. The artwork reflects an abstract yet evocative portrayal, emphasizing its subjects' essence over realistic representation.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
