More about this artwork
"Vaas Met Bloemen," which translates to "Vase with Flowers," is a charming ink drawing by Dutch artist Leo Gestel. The artwork showcases a tall, slender vase filled with an abundant array of flowers and foliage. The blossoms are depicted in a detailed, yet stylized manner, with various floral shapes including prominent daisy-like flowers with distinct, circular centers. The vase itself is interesting, featuring a globular base and a narrow neck, adorned with a textured pattern which adds a tactile quality to the drawing, contrasting with the organic lines of the flowers. A note written presumably by the artist below the vase reads "niet veel verkomen," which translates to "not much to complain about" or could suggest a note about the commonality or simplicity of the subject matter.Overall, the light and expressive line work used by Gestel generates a dynamic and somewhat whimsical composition, capturing the natural beauty and randomness of a floral arrangement in a way that breathes life and emotion into the seemingly simple subject.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
