More about this artwork
This painting by Leo Gestel, entitled "Woman Head," is a striking example of minimalist art combined with expressionist influences. The artwork features a stylized depiction of a woman's head and upper shoulders, portrayed using crisp, bold contour lines against a plain background. The woman’s face is presented in profile, with her features gracefully outlined. Her eye, boldly defined, adds a focal point and conveys a sense of calm introspection. Gestel effectively uses flowing lines to represent her hair, which cascades down her neck and shoulders, adding both texture and movement to the composition. The simplicity of the lines and the lack of color focus the viewer's attention on the elegance and fluidity of the form.Overall, the artwork’s straightforward black and white linework gives it a modern and timeless quality, making it both visually appealing and thought-provoking in its expressive simplicity.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
