More about this artwork
This painting by Leo Gestel, titled "Elephant," presents a striking depiction of an elephant rendered in a dynamic, expressive style. The use of bold, scribbled lines and brushstrokes captures the mighty form and textured skin of the elephant. The composition focuses solely on the animal, which is centered against a plain background, drawing all attention to the subject itself. The artist's technique emphasizes movement and the play of light and shadow across the elephant’s body, despite the monochromatic palette. The shadow under the elephant suggests its weight and presence. Gestel’s style appears free and spontaneous, which gives the artwork an energetic and raw appearance. It evokes a sense of the majestic and serene nature of the elephant, highlighting its strength and the fluidity in its stance. The overall effect is both dramatic and intimate, allowing the viewer to appreciate the essence of this magnificent creature.
