More about this artwork

The painting titled "Crowing Rooster" by Leo Gestel is a visually compelling work that features a bold and expressive depiction of a rooster. The artwork is rendered primarily in black and white, using high-contrast shapes and forms to create a dynamic composition. The focal point of the painting is the rooster itself, which is placed centrally and portrayed in a crowing position, likely symbolizing the bird's natural behavior of proclaiming dominance or marking territory. The rooster's body is depicted with various abstract shapes and patches of different textures, possibly indicating feathers.Surrounding the rooster, the background is composed of abstract floral and leafy figures, intertwined and overlapping, adding an organic touch to the portrayal. These elements could be representing foliage or a garden, situating the rooster in a more natural setting.Overall, Gestel’s use of stark monochromatic colors and abstract forms brings out the primal essence of the rooster, emphasizing its vigor and vitality. The painting’s style gestures towards Cubism with its fragmented forms and figures, presenting a modernist take on a traditional subject.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
