More about this artwork
The painting "Drie Zwarte Paarden Staand Naar Links Kijkend" by Leo Gestel is a striking work that showcases three black horses depicted in a very expressive and somewhat abstract style. The title translates to "Three Black Horses Standing Looking Left" from Dutch. In the artwork, the horses are portrayed with bold, fluid brushstrokes that emphasize their forms and movements. The texture and strokes are loose, conveying motion and the dynamic nature of the horses. Each horse seems to be captured in mid-movement, perhaps shifting their stance or turning their heads, which adds a sense of immediacy and life to the scene. The use of black ink on a lighter background not only highlights the subject but also enhances the dramatic effect of the portrayal. The composition is simplified and devoid of any background details, which focuses the viewer's attention purely on the horses and their expressions.Overall, the painting by Leo Gestel is powerful and emotive, capturing the essence and spirit of the horses through minimal yet expressive lines and forms.

He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
