More about this artwork
The painting titled "Horse" by Leo Gestel is a striking example of modernist art rendered in a monochromatic palette. The image captures the figure of a horse in a dynamic, slightly elevated pose that suggests movement or perhaps rearing. Gestel's use of bold, fluid brush strokes and minimal detail focuses the viewer's attention on the form and motion of the animal rather than its finer features. The horse is depicted with a sense of vigor and vitality; its muscles are suggested through sweeping, curvilinear lines that create both volume and tension within the body. The mane and tail of the horse are portrayed with expressive, rhythmic lines that enhance the overall feeling of motion.Gestel’s style in this painting involves a reduction of form to essential lines and shapes, which is characteristic of some modernist approaches that aim to capture the essence rather than a detailed realistic representation. It's a powerful depiction that communicates a sense of freedom and the natural energy of the horse.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
