More about this artwork

"Woman's Head" by Leo Gestel is a striking example of modernist art that captures the essence of the subject through simplified forms and stark contrasts. The painting showcases a stylized portrait of a woman's face and neck rendered almost entirely in black and white. The artist uses bold, fluid lines to define the contours of the face, the delicate features, and the cascading hair, which flows with a rhythmic grace.Gestel's artistry is evident in the way he balances the solid black areas with the white of the paper to emphasize the gentle curves of the woman's cheek, her serene eyelids, and the softness of her lips. There's a graceful simplicity in the execution that suggests a blend of confidence and vulnerability in the subject's demeanor. This minimalist approach not only highlights Gestel's skill in using negative space and contrast but also invites the viewer to engage more deeply with the emotions and personality conveyed through the subtle details of the woman’s expression.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
