More about this artwork

This piece titled "View Of The Eiffel Tower In Paris" by Leo Gestel is a graphic line drawing that captures the iconic Eiffel Tower with a backdrop that conveys the city of Paris. In this artwork, Gestel uses minimalistic yet expressive lines to depict the towering structure of the Eiffel Tower, which dominates the foreground. The Tower is detailed with cross-hatching and sketchy lines that suggest its intricate ironwork.Surrounding the Eiffel Tower are stylized representations of Parisian buildings, seemingly condensed to give a bustling, yet serene cityscape view. The inclusion of a building that appears to be the Sacré-Cœur on Montmartre to the right of the drawing creates a layer of depth and invites recognition of the city’s other famous landmarks. The sky is adorned with light, fluid strokes that form clouds, conveying a dynamic yet calm sky, softly indicating motion. Below the horizon, you can notice the suggestion of a setting or rising sun, adding a tranquil, timeless element to the piece.Overall, the drawing's sketch-like, abstract quality and its monochromatic scheme lend it a dreamy, almost nostalgic feeling, setting a tone that is both historic and whimsically contemporary.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
