More about this artwork
This painting by Leo Gestel, intriguingly titled "Twee Naakte Figuren En Een Paard Aan De Zee" (Two Naked Figures and a Horse by the Sea), reveals a bold and expressive composition in what appears to be a seaside landscape. The artwork utilizes a vivid array of colors and broad, loose brushstrokes, characteristic of Gestel’s expressionistic style. In the foreground, two human figures are depicted. The figure on the left is seated with their back towards us, glancing towards the other figure, who appears as if caught in a moment of rising or half-turning. This dynamic between the figures suggests possible interaction or movement. Their bodies are rendered with warm tones, and the brushwork emphasizes the curves and contours, enhancing a sense of physical presence and energy. To the right, a horse stands, facing away from the viewer, its body painted with cooler shades like blues and purples, juxtaposed against the warmer hues of the human figures.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
