More about this artwork

The painting "Place Du Carrousel, Paris" by Camille Pissarro exemplifies the vibrant and lively atmosphere of a Parisian square, captured with the distinctive brushwork and light palette characteristic of the Impressionist movement. Created in 1900, the painting shows a view of the Place du Carrousel, which is near the Louvre Museum, one of the foremost landmarks in Paris. In the foreground of the painting, daily life plays out through groups of figures who gather and stroll about the square, suggesting the hustle and bustle typical of a Parisian day. The figures are rendered in loose, quick brushstrokes, typical of Pissarro's style, capturing the movement and fleeting nature of the scene. These small, almost sketch-like figures add a vibrant, dynamic element to the work.Further back, the grand architecture of the Louvre emerges. The buildings are depicted with somewhat more defined and structured strokes compared to the figures, emphasizing their permanence and stability. The prominence and intricate details of the Louvre’s façade are accentuated, reflecting its architectural significance and the contrast between the ephemeral moment of human activity and the enduring presence of historical structures. The palette is bright, with a dominance of blues and greens, mirroring a clear sky and lush trees that suggest a warm, sunny day.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
