More about this artwork
The image you've shared is quite symbolic and detailed. It features a circular design resembling a seal or emblem, and at its center, there’s a depiction of a bird of prey perched atop what appears to be a chest or box. The bird, beautifully rendered with detailed plumage, is shown mid-cry while stretching its wings as if poised for flight. Notably, its gaze is directed upwards toward a large sun figure with radiating beams, giving the sense of a majestic and powerful moment captured.Around the periphery of the circle, there are inscriptions presumably related to the organization or entity associated with the seal. The text reads “BUREAU VOOR HANDELSWAEC,” suggesting it’s an emblem for a bureau or an office likely involved in commerce or trade. The design elements such as the bold, clear lines are evocative of emblems used in official stamps and seals, imparting a formal, authoritative feel to the image. This portrayal of the bird gazing at the sun can symbolize vision, foresight, and striving towards higher goals or illumination. The box or chest under the bird could imply that the entity this emblem represents guards or treasures its contents, adding an element of responsibility or guardianship. As a piece attributed to Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof, this work reflects a meticulous attention to detail and a strong grasp of symbolic imagery, common in his work.
