More about this artwork

This painting by Odilon Redon, titled "Pandora," is a captivating blend of ethereal and dream-like qualities that are characteristic of his work. The piece features a central figure, presumably Pandora herself, depicted in a subtle, almost translucent manner. Her form is delicate and ethereal, with her posture gentle and introspective as she appears to be looking downwards at a box, which legend tells was the source of all human woes. The setting around Pandora is lush and vibrant, filled with a chaotic yet beautiful array of flowers and foliage that nearly overwhelms the senses. The use of bright, vivid colors contrasts with the pale, almost ghostly appearance of Pandora, drawing a stark juxtaposition between the central figure and her surroundings. The background is a whirl of colors, with a magically depicted tree stretching upwards, its branches bare and stark against the sky, adding a slightly somber note to the otherwise vibrant scene.Redon's use of texture and light creates an environment that feels both real and otherworldly. His brushwork invites the viewer to look closer and explore the complexity of colors and forms he employs to convey a scene filled not just with visual beauty, but with profound narrative depth. This artwork embodies themes of curiosity, consequence, and the overwhelming rush of unleashed emotions, encapsulating the tragic yet deeply intriguing myth of Pandora in a way that is both visually stunning and emotionally evocative.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
