More about this artwork

"Guardian Spirit of the Waters" by Odilon Redon is a haunting and atmospheric work that blends elements of the surreal and the symbolic. This piece exhibits a large, ethereal face emerging from the darkness, dominating the upper portion of the composition. The face is rendered with great detail, particularly around the large, arresting eye, which seems to be watching over or searching the waters beneath.Below the looming visage, a tranquil yet enigmatic seascape unfolds. A small sailboat, with its sail fully billowed, navigates the calm waters, surrounded by a few distant birds. This maritime scene might represent the mundane world of human endeavor, quietly unfolding under the gaze of the mysterious spiritual entity above. The stark contrast between the detailed face and the minimalist, almost abstract depiction of the sea and sky evokes a sense of otherworldliness and the sublime. Redon's work is often imbued with such dreamlike imagery, where the lines between reality and fantasy blur, engaging the viewer's imagination and emotions deeply. The "Guardian Spirit of the Waters" encapsulates themes of protection, mystery, and the unseen forces of nature, suggesting a deep, spiritual connection between the behemoth spirit and the elemental world it oversees.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
