More about this artwork

The painting "Old Town Street" by Kęstutis Jauniškis embodies a beautifully surreal perspective of an urban landscape that communicates a sense of quiet and nostalgia. Most striking in this composition is the artist’s use of color and texture, creating a warm, immersive mood. The hues of gold, tan, and muted blues dominate the scene, suggesting perhaps the glow of a late afternoon. The buildings, while imposing in their size, are softened by Jauniškis's brushwork, with faded and somewhat blurred window details that give the painting a dream-like quality. The sharpened edges and the steep perspective draw the viewer's eye along the structures, suggesting depth and adding a three-dimensional feel to the scene. An intriguing element in the bottom left corner, depicting a street sign or lamp that emerges from the ground, breaks the uniformity of the building facades and introduces another layer of texture. It resembles an abstract figure, almost like a sentinel overlooking the scene, which complements the empty street by adding a note of solitude and reflective quietude. The slender, almost imperceptible lines on the road add to the composition by directing the viewer's gaze through the painting, possibly leading towards an unseen vanishing point, further deepening the sense of perspective.Overall, Jauniškis has masterfully created a painting that feels both time-worn and timeless, capturing an essence of an old town street that transcends specific geographic or temporal locales.

Kęstutis Jauniškis was born in Lithuania in 1961. He studied economy at Vilnius University and graduated in 1985 with a degree in MA. While studying economy, the artist also attended the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1986. As an artist, Kestutis Jauniskis is interested in architectural forms and colour, and their relationship with their surroundings. In his paintings, reality is sometimes mixed with fantasy, which infuses a poetic touch into this rational world. It is in these scenes that Kestutis Jauniskis finds the shapes, colours, light and sky that evoke an emotional response in him, making him want to record them. The abstraction of his painting best represents the depth of feeling he has when viewing this real world that surrounds us, finding beauty in what others may consider ugly or mundane. At the same time, the artist likes to experiment with new abstract forms and objects. His work has been exhibited in Finland and Lithuania. He has participated in a group exhibition titled 'The Modern Lithuanian Art' at the Museum of Modern Art in Valencia, Spain.
