More about this artwork

In "Old City Motif I" by Kęstutis Jauniškis, we see a fascinating play of color, texture, and form that unifies into a rustic and somewhat melancholy depiction of city structures. The painting portrays a seemingly simple yet expressive scene featuring an old building, possibly a house, in a warm reddish-brown tone that contrasts starkly against the calm beige of the background, giving off a feeling of isolation and endurance through time. What captures the eye is the minimalist, almost abstract approach to architectural forms, where details are suggested rather than fully defined. The walls and the roof of the building are textured and have patches of colors overlaying them - hints of blue, orange, and white, suggesting wear, artistic decay, or perhaps reflections of the building's vibrant past.Adjacent to the building, there is a bare tree, its branches stretching out in a complex web, which adds an organic touch to the composition and contrasts the solidity of the building. The ground around the building is depicted with brisk, dynamic strokes, enhancing the raw and textural quality of the painting. The palette is primarily earthy with sparks of vivid colors, which might symbolize aspects of life within the old cityscape or the resilience of nature and humanity amid urban decay. The overall mood is contemplative, inviting the viewer to reflect on the passage of time and the stories embedded within architectural forms.

Kęstutis Jauniškis was born in Lithuania in 1961. He studied economy at Vilnius University and graduated in 1985 with a degree in MA. While studying economy, the artist also attended the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1986. As an artist, Kestutis Jauniskis is interested in architectural forms and colour, and their relationship with their surroundings. In his paintings, reality is sometimes mixed with fantasy, which infuses a poetic touch into this rational world. It is in these scenes that Kestutis Jauniskis finds the shapes, colours, light and sky that evoke an emotional response in him, making him want to record them. The abstraction of his painting best represents the depth of feeling he has when viewing this real world that surrounds us, finding beauty in what others may consider ugly or mundane. At the same time, the artist likes to experiment with new abstract forms and objects. His work has been exhibited in Finland and Lithuania. He has participated in a group exhibition titled 'The Modern Lithuanian Art' at the Museum of Modern Art in Valencia, Spain.
