More about this artwork

This painting by Odilon Redon, titled “Haunting,” exhibits a stark and mysterious visual composition characteristic of his work in the Symbolist movement. The artwork is rendered mostly in monochrome, emphasizing a sense of depth and intrigue through its high contrast and detailed textural effects.Central in the composition is a figure of a woman, depicted in a flowing gown. She is shown in profile with a delicate yet somber expression, perhaps symbolizing innocence or contemplation. Surrounding her are floating faces or masks, which appear disembodied and spectral. These faces have exaggerated, somewhat distorted features and contribute to the eerie, haunting quality suggested by the title of the piece. The ethereal and slightly menacing appearance of the faces may represent various emotions, memories, or spiritual entities. Their presence near the woman suggests a narrative or emotional interaction that is open to interpretation, involving themes of inner turmoil, the supernatural, or the unconscious mind.Redon's work often delves into the realm of fantasy and the exploration of human psyche, using motifs that blur the line between the real and the surreal. In “Haunting,” the juxtaposition of a serenely postured woman with unsettling, ghostly apparitions evokes a sense of mystery and psychological depth, inviting viewers to contemplate the unseen forces that influence and disturb the human spirit.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
