More about this artwork

Maxime Maufra's evocative painting "La marée montante à Port-Blanc," painted in 1914, encapsulates the rugged allure and dynamic energy of the Brittany coast. In this mesmerizing seascape, Maufra masterfully captures the moment the rising tide envelops the rocky shores of Port-Blanc. The foreboding, dark rocks on the right contrast sharply with the swirling blues and greens of the ocean, which Maufra animated with lively, expressive brushstrokes that convey the ceaseless movement of water. Above, the sky, infused with light pastel clouds, adds a soft, almost ethereal quality to the scene, reflecting the changing lights typical of coastal weather.Maufra's skilled use of color and form not only depicts a simple coastal view but also evokes the dramatic interplay between land and sea. The painting invites viewers to feel the spray of the sea and hear the waves crashing against the shore, making it a testament to Maufra's ability to blend realism with impressionistic sensitivity.
