More about this artwork

Henry Ossawa Tanner's "The Annunciation" is a profoundly moving depiction of the biblical scene where the Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Tanner, an African American artist whose works often explore spiritual themes, brings a unique intimacy and tenderness to this revered story. In the painting, Mary is depicted as a young woman, sitting on a humble bed in a softly lit, rustic room. The divine presence of the angel is represented not as a conventional figure, but as a brilliant shaft of golden light that penetrates the darkness of the room, illuminating the scene with a mystical glow. Mary's expression, one of contemplative awe, captures her profound ambivalence—her humility and acceptance mixed with a sense of the immense weight of her destiny.Tanner's use of light and color evokes an almost tangible sense of the divine presence, making "The Annunciation" not just a visual narrative but an emotional and spiritual experience.

Henry Ossawa Tanner (June 21, 1859 – May 25, 1937) was an American artist who spent much of his career in France. He became the first African-American painter to gain international acclaim. Tanner moved to Paris, France, in 1891 to study at the Académie Julian and gained acclaim in French artistic circles. His painting Daniel in the Lions' Den (1895, location unknown) was accepted into the 1896 Salon, the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Tanner's Resurrection of Lazarus (1896, Musée d'Orsay, Paris) was purchased by the French government after winning the third-place medal at the 1897 Salon. In 1923, the French government elected Tanner chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
