More about this artwork

"Scene of Algiers" is a captivating oil painting by Henry Ossawa Tanner, an artist renowned for his profound and introspective works. This landscape painting vividly captures the natural beauty and atmospheric qualities of Algiers, portraying a serene and somewhat ethereal vista that engages the viewer's senses. In the painting, Tanner utilizes a soft, yet dynamic palette of blues, whites, and earth tones to create a scene that feels both dreamlike and anchored in reality. The foreground is dominated by slender, white trees that direct our gaze towards a middle distance dotted by a lone figure, perhaps a local wandering through this tranquil setting. The background features the expansive sky and sea merging on the horizon, setting a mood of infinite spaciousness and quiet contemplation. This work is a testament to Tanner’s ability to evoke emotion and narrative through his use of light, shade, and color, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect on the beauty of distant landscapes and the universal sense of peace they can offer.

Henry Ossawa Tanner (June 21, 1859 – May 25, 1937) was an American artist who spent much of his career in France. He became the first African-American painter to gain international acclaim. Tanner moved to Paris, France, in 1891 to study at the Académie Julian and gained acclaim in French artistic circles. His painting Daniel in the Lions' Den (1895, location unknown) was accepted into the 1896 Salon, the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Tanner's Resurrection of Lazarus (1896, Musée d'Orsay, Paris) was purchased by the French government after winning the third-place medal at the 1897 Salon. In 1923, the French government elected Tanner chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
