More about this artwork

"Morning Sunlight on the Snow, Eragny-sur-Epte" by Camille Pissarro is a captivating work that beautifully captures a serene winter scene. Created in 1895, this painting is an exquisite example of Pissarro's masterful use of light and texture to depict the chilly atmosphere of a snowy landscape. In the painting, a gentle light permeates through a thicket of tall, slender trees dusted with snow. The light seems to dance on the delicate frost, creating a soft shimmer that contrasts with the subdued hues of the winter sky. The ground, blanketed in snow, reflects the morning sunlight, adding a sense of depth and brightness to the scene.A solitary figure, likely a local villager, is seen walking along a path, carrying a burden. This human element introduces a sense of scale and provides a glimpse into the daily life amid the quietude of nature. The figure's presence adds a touch of warmth to the otherwise cool palette of whites and blues, drawing the viewer into the peaceful, frosty morning in Eragny-sur-Epte.Pissarro's brushwork gives a textured feel to the canvas, evoking the crisp, cold air and the crunch of snow underfoot.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
