More about this artwork

1930Explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Atlas Mountains through the eyes of Henry Ossawa Tanner in his evocative painting "The Good Shepherd (Atlas Mountains, Morocco)." This artwork, painted around 1930, showcases Tanner's unique blend of spiritual narrative and naturalistic scenery. In this striking scene, a solitary figure, the shepherd, is depicted in a vast, awe-inspiring mountainous landscape. The shepherd, clothed in a traditional white garment that contrasts with the earthy tones of the mountains, appears small and humble amidst the grandeur of nature, highlighting the theme of man's connection to the earth and the divine.Tanner's use of muted, blended colors and his textural rendering of the rocky terrain invite viewers to feel the imposing presence of the natural world. The painting plays with light and shadow, with the golden sky suggesting either the rising or setting sun, adding a layer of temporal beauty to the eternal landscape. The inclusion of the shepherd with his flock, barely discernible, not only anchors the human presence in this daunting environment but also serves as a metaphor for guidance and protection.

Henry Ossawa Tanner (June 21, 1859 – May 25, 1937) was an American artist who spent much of his career in France. He became the first African-American painter to gain international acclaim. Tanner moved to Paris, France, in 1891 to study at the Académie Julian and gained acclaim in French artistic circles. His painting Daniel in the Lions' Den (1895, location unknown) was accepted into the 1896 Salon, the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Tanner's Resurrection of Lazarus (1896, Musée d'Orsay, Paris) was purchased by the French government after winning the third-place medal at the 1897 Salon. In 1923, the French government elected Tanner chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
