More about this artwork

Explore the enigmatic and captivating world of Karl Wiener's "Ohne Titel II" (Untitled II), a fascinating artwork from around 1940, now featured in our collection. This painting captivates with its abstract composition and subtle interplay of colors, illustrating Wiener's unique vision during a pivotal era in art history. The painting presents three stylized figures positioned against a surreal landscape. Each figure, depicted in a distinct, almost geometric form, conveys a mysterious narrative open to interpretation. The central figure, cloaked in a vibrant pink dress, stands prominently, drawing the viewer's gaze with her enigmatic presence. Flanked on either side, the figures fade into more muted tones—a testament to Wiener’s masterful use of color to evoke mood and focus.Above these figures, the landscape unfolds in layers of dream-like clouds and celestial bodies, painted in a spectrum of soothing blues, muted yellows, and gentle pinks. This otherworldly sky suggests a deep tranquility, contrasting dynamically with the bold, earthy colors of the architectural forms at the painting's base."Ohne Titel II" is a brilliant example of Karl Wiener’s artistic journey, reflecting his exploration of abstract forms and the emotional depths they can convey.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
