More about this artwork

We are pleased to feature one of Odilon Redon's compelling works titled 'Le Liseur' (The Reader), created in 1892. This evocative lithograph presents a contemplative scene bathed in soft, subdued light that highlights the peaceful solitude of reading. In 'Le Liseur,' a bearded man is depicted immersed in a book, seated comfortably in an armchair. The setting is an intimate space, perhaps a personal study or a quiet corner of a home, where a table beside him holds what appears to be another book or journal, suggesting the depth and continuation of his intellectual journey.A striking feature of the artwork is the contrast between the dark interior and the luminous window, which casts a celestial light that envelopes the reader, adding a spiritual dimension to the act of reading. The intricate detailing of the man’s facial hair and clothing are rendered with fine, soft strokes, emphasizing a sense of wisdom and serenity.Odilon Redon, known for his unique blend of symbolism and dream-like ambiance, employs a masterful use of light and shadow in 'Le Liseur'. This artwork not only depicts a simple act of reading but also invites viewers to ponder the profound solitude and the transformative power of literature. This lithograph makes a compelling piece for contemplation, perfect for any art lover who appreciates the quiet moments of life captured through exquisite artistic expression.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
