More about this artwork

Dive into the historical depths of Košice through Konštantín Bauer’s striking ink painting, "Gorkého nábrežie v Košiciach." Created between 1924 and 1927, this artwork captures a unique moment in the Eastern Slovak city, rendering its industrial vigor with bold strokes and evocative contrasts. In this composition, Bauer masterfully uses ink to illustrate a bustling riverbank scene. The foreground is dominated by rustic, undefined paths that meander towards the heart of the industrial landscape. Utility poles stretch skyward, mingling with the organic forms of trees against a dynamically sketched sky.The middle ground is bustling with activity; figures, possibly workers, are depicted in mid-motion, interacting with the environment or perhaps pausing from their labor. The structures around them, characterized by rough textural strokes, suggest factories or warehouses integral to the city's economic life at the time.In the background, the city's silhouette fuses with the industrial apparatus. Chimneys punctuate the skyline, emitting plumes that blend into the clouds, suggesting the relentless activity within this urban setting. The overall impression is kinetic, echoing the pulse of Košice during a period of significant industrial change.Konštantín Bauer’s work not only serves as a historical snapshot but also invites viewers to reflect on the transformation and the relentless passage of time.
