More about this artwork

"Le Monstre Vert (Apollon Chevauchant Le Serpent Python)" by Odilon Redon is a captivating representation that embodies the Symbolist movement's fascination with the imagination and the mystical. This painting depicts the mythological scene of Apollo, the god of light, music, and poetry, triumphantly riding the serpent Python. The artwork is vibrant and ethereal, with bold, watercolor hues that enhance the dream-like quality Redon is renowned for.The central figure of Apollo is depicted as a luminous, almost translucent form, exuding a sense of calm and control over the monstrous serpent beneath him. The serpent, Python, is rendered in dark, murky greens and blacks, with a grotesque face that conveys terror and malevolence. This stark contrast between the figures highlights Apollo's divine nature and the darkness of Python that he overcomes. In the background, Redon uses a blend of blues and greens to create a lush, abstract landscape, suggesting a celestial or otherworldly realm. The use of light and color around Apollo seems to radiate from him, emphasizing his role as a beacon of light overcoming darkness.Redon's work often explored themes of fantasy versus reality, and in "Le Monstre Vert," he invites viewers to ponder the power of enlightenment and knowledge against ignorance and fear.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
