More about this artwork

We are delighted to feature the enchanting painting, "The Grand Dukes Boris and Kirill Vladimirovich as Children," crafted by the renowned Finnish artist, Albert Edelfelt in 1881. This artwork beautifully captures the innocence and sublime delicacy of childhood through its portrayal of the young Russian princes, Boris and Kirill Vladimirovich. The painting showcases the two young brothers in an informal, yet richly decorated indoor setting. The elder, Kirill, is seated on a plush red and black fur rug, his posture relaxed yet somewhat dignified, hinting at his royal upbringing. Dressed in a white lace-trimmed frock, his serious expression and direct gaze impart a sense of maturity beyond his tender years.Beside him, the younger Boris embraces a small toy, his demeanor more relaxed and childlike. His soft, curly hair and rounded cheeks are highlighted by the gentle lighting, evoking the softness of youth. Both boys are surrounded by an array of luxurious objects, including a parasol and a number of toys, which not only illustrate their privileged lifestyle but also add a playful touch to the composition.Albert Edelfelt's masterful use of color and texture brings this scene to life, with the soft whites and creams of the children’s clothing contrasting vividly against the dark, rich tones of the background. The attention to detail, from the lace on the parasol to the embroidery on the fabrics, showcases Edelfelt's skill in rendering textures and materials, making this painting not just a visual delight but also a testament to his technical prowess.
