More about this artwork

Welcome to a captivating glimpse of intimate, everyday elegance as portrayed by the renowned Finnish painter Albert Edelfelt in his 1884 masterpiece, "Elevenses." This painting invites viewers into a serene, private moment shared between two women during a morning coffee break. In "Elevenses," Edelfelt masterfully captures the subtle interplay of light and shadow, using his brush to echo the delicate textures of fabric and the reflective surfaces of the porcelain tea set. The two women, engrossed in quiet conversation, are depicted with a remarkable sense of realism and depth. The woman in black, with her intense gaze and poised demeanor, contrasts beautifully with her companion, dressed in a softer, red attire, suggesting warmth and perhaps a more reflective personality.Set against a loosely rendered, impressionistic background that hints at a cozy interior, the scene is both tranquil and vibrant. The skillful use of lighting highlights the figures and the table setting, creating a focal point that draws the viewer into their world."Elevenses" not only showcases Edelfelt's talent for portraiture and his keen eye for detail but also serves as a window into the cultural practices of the time, reflecting the social importance of such moments of leisure in the daily life of the era. This painting stands out as a testament to the beauty of ordinary moments and the enduring charm of Edelfelt's artistry.
