More about this artwork

This painting by Utagawa Toyokuni features the actor Nakamura Utayemon in the company of two women as they prepare for the New Year ceremony. The artwork depicts a traditional Japanese setting, emblematic of the Ukiyo-e style of the Edo period. In the painting, Nakamura Utayemon is portrayed with a somewhat stern expression, dressed in formal attire which includes a kimono adorned with intricate patterns. His posture and facial expression suggest a dignified or possibly a ceremonial role in the upcoming festivities. The two women accompanying him show different levels of activity and engagement. The woman on the left holds a laden basket filled with items essential for the New Year celebrations, such as pine branches and perhaps other symbolic or decorative elements. Her attire and the careful way she balances the basket illustrate her role in the preparations. The details on her kimono and her elaborate hairstyle reflect the traditional fashion of the time. The other woman, positioned nearer to Utayemon and partially kneeling, also shows detailed clothing and a distinctive hairstyle.

Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) was a prominent Japanese woodblock printmaker and painter of the Edo period. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), he was the chief disciple of Utagawa Toyoharu, a well-respected printmaker. He specialized in kabuki theater prints, which depicted famous actors in performances and featured dramatic scenes from plays. In addition to kabuki theater prints, Toyokuni also produced portraits of geishas, landscapes, and scenes from everyday life. He eventually became a leading master of the Utagawa School.
