More about this artwork

Een man van het volk, painted by Odilon Redon in circa 1887, is a captivating example of the artist's unique approach to portraiture that merges elements of realism with a distinct, psychologically charged atmosphere. This work is notably different from Redon's more famous forays into the dreamlike and the fantastical, instead presenting a stark, introspective look at an individual. The painting depicts the profile of a man's face, rendered with dramatic contrasts and rich textures that highlight the contours of his features and the expression in his eyes. The man's gaze, directed away from the viewer, adds an element of introspection and solemnity. His facial features are accentuated by dark shading, while lighter areas draw attention to his piercing eye and the bridge of his nose, suggesting a depth of character and emotional intensity.Hints of a crown-like halo suggest a metaphorical or symbolic significance to the man, perhaps elevating him as an everyman figure or a silent observer of his time. The background and minimalistic use of color focus the viewer's attention on the psychological depth and humanism captured in the subject's visage.Een man van het volk is thus a powerful example of Redon's ability to transcend traditional portrait techniques, engendering both a sense of curiosity and profound empathy towards the subject, capturing an essence of humanity that is both timeless and reflective.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
