More about this artwork

We invite you to delve into the evocative realms of Odilon Redon's lithograph, "And over there, the Astral Idol, the Apotheosis" created in 1891. This work exemplifies Redon’s predilection for the mystical and the obscure, drawing the viewer into a world beyond the tangible. The composition is framed within a circular vignette that evokes the impression of gazing through a lens or portal. At the center, stands a solitary figure cloaked in a hooded garment, emanating an aura of solemnity and mystique. The figure holds a bow, symbolizing potential action or defense, while the deep, engulfing shadows that surround this idol give the impression of vast, undefined space.Redon's use of intense, contrasting shades accentuates the ethereal quality of the image, evoking a feeling of depth and the unknown. This artwork is not merely a visual experience but an invitation to explore the esoteric and spiritual dialogues of the fin-de-siècle period. This lithograph is a testament to Redon’s ability to transcend traditional artistic boundaries, inviting us to ponder the unseen forces and deeper meanings that lie beyond the visible world.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
