More about this artwork

Experience the enigmatic allure of Odilon Redon's artwork *And There Fell a Great Star from Heaven, Burning as it were a Lamp*. Created in 1899, this fascinating piece effectively captures the mystical and often surreal style that Redon is celebrated for. The painting illustrates an ethereal scene drawn from a powerful visual narrative, possibly inspired by apocalyptic literature or allegorical themes. In this evocative work, the focus is on the dramatic descent of a great star from the heavens, depicted as an intense, luminescent entity that appears to light up the dark surrounding space. The star is surrounded by chaotic energy, its force exerting upon the scene, while ghostly figures and ominous forms add layers of mystery and foreboding. The composition suggests a cosmic turmoil, invoking a sense of awe and dread simltaneously.Redon's artwork often delves into the realm of the unknown, merging the real with the fantastical, and this piece is no exception. The use of stark contrasts, with deep blacks against the glaring white of the star, maximizes the emotional impact of the scene, pulling the viewer into the depths of its fiery descent. This painting not only exemplifies Redon's unique style but also his ability to convey profound emotions and thought-provoking themes through his distinctive use of dark, dreamlike images that border the edge of nightmare and revelation.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
