More about this artwork

"Apparition," crafted by the masterful Odilon Redon between 1880 and 1890, depicts a hauntingly mesmerizing vision that challenges the boundaries between the seen and the unseen. Drawn predominantly in dark, earthy tones with striking contrasts of luminous highlights, the painting captures a mysterious figure emerging from the depths of darkness. In the center, a ghostly face appears, almost floating amidst swirling strokes of dark texture that seem to both reveal and conceal its form. This ethereal visage gazes out with a profound and enigmatic expression, stirring a mix of awe and ambiguity. Its eyes, though faint, magnetically pull the viewer into a world beyond the ordinary. The use of light and shadow in the artwork intensifies the spectral quality of the apparition. Redon's brushwork skillfully blurs the lines between reality and fantasy, inviting intimate interpretation and reflection. This piece, exemplary of Redon's fascination with the fantastical and the obscure, evokes emotions that linger, challenging one to ponder the realms of dream and reality."Apparition" exemplifies Redon's prowess in using visual ambiguities to stir the imagination, making it a captivating piece not only for its aesthetic value but also for its ability to delve deep into the subconscious realms of its viewers.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
