More about this artwork

"He Raises the Bronze Urn" (1888) is an evocative lithograph by French symbolist artist Odilon Redon that masterfully captures the essence of mystery and the ethereal with its dramatic use of light and shadow. In this atmospheric work, two draped figures stand, almost ghostly, within an obscured, dimly lit space. The focal point of the image is a bright, radiant light emitted from a bronze urn, held aloft by one of the figures. The urn acts not only as a source of light but also serves as a symbol of enlightenment or revelation amidst the prevailing darkness.Redon's art frequently explores themes of fantasy, and this piece is no exception, inviting viewers into a mystical scene that seems suspended between the realms of reality and imagination. The contrasting elements of light and dark enhance the sense of a moment captured in time, one teeming with symbolic significance and emotional depth. The intricate detail of the figures’ robes and the soft, almost melting quality of the background textures contribute to the overall dream-like quality of the painting." He Raises the Bronze Urn" stands out as a compelling exploration of human interaction with the unknown and the power of light to transform and transcend our understanding of the tangible world.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
