More about this artwork

"The Celestial Art" by Odilon Redon is a fascinating exploration of the ethereal and the imaginative. Created in 1894, this lithograph blends elements of mystery and fantasy, characteristic of Redon's work, which often delves into the realm of the abstract and the surreal. In this compelling piece, Redon depicts a large, serene face in profile, looming large over the composition. The face, which exudes a sense of calm and reflection, appears to be either gazing into the distance or deep in thought, suggesting a moment of introspection or a contemplation of the universe. Beside this giant face floats a celestial figure, an angelic being bearing a musical instrument, possibly a cello. This figure, with wings that meld into the swirling background, seems to be in motion, adding a dynamic contrast to the stillness of the face. The background is a textured mix of shadows and light, with both the instrument and the figure emerging from and dissolving into the surrounding atmosphere. This interaction of figure and background plays into Redon's frequent theme of the visible merging with the invisible, the tangible connecting with the realms of thought and dream."The Celestial Art" invites viewers to interpret its elements in personal ways, reflecting Redon's belief in the power of art to unlock the mysteries of the human psyche and the broader universe.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
